Jack London once wrote, "I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry out I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time" (Norman). That is exactly how the author lived his life. London never lived a quiet life; he was always trying to achieve new heights, even days before his death.
John Griffith Chaney was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. He was born to Flora Wellman and William Chaney, shortly after his birth William Chaney abandoned his family (Biography). Nine months after his birth, Flora married John London, and John assumed his step-fathers surname. His family moved often, most of the time they lived on farms. What he saw on the country side as a child he later depicted in his book "The Road" (Wissdorf).
