The compare and contrast essay is used to set up the process essay. There are two types of process essays: the instructional essay and the informative essay. The instructional essay is used to tell how to do something, while the informative essay is used to show how something happens or how to become something. A compare and contrast essay can be describe either as a whole or in parts. As a whole, the compare and contrast essay describes two or more things throughout the whole composition. On the other hand, in parts, the compare and contrast essay describes one topic in one paragraph, and then a separate topic in a different paragraph. For example, comparing your clothes to my clothes in a paragraph and then comparing your personality to my personality in another paragraph. The stories "Two Ways to Belong in America", "Why Boys Don't Play With Dolls", and "On Dumpster Diving" all use the compare and contrast outline in either parts or as a whole, while "Homeboy" doesn't follow an outline. In this paper, I will look at the different ways in which each story uses compare and contrast and then conclude that was the most effective.
