Juvenile Curfews
"It is 10:00 p.m. Do you know where your children are"? In the late seventies and early eighties this question signaled the time of evening when local television stations signed off the air. (Yes, there actually was a time when the world couldn't watch TV 24/7!) This was comparable to a Public Service Announcement of today. It implied that if it was too late to broadcast programming, then it was obviously too late for children and teens to be anywhere but locked away safe and secure in their homes under the watchful eye of their parents. This announcement served a two-fold purpose: 1) it suggested to parents that the acceptable way to raise their children was to enforce strict curfews, and 2) it was intended to keep teenagers and youngsters from hanging out and creating mischief.
Today, this has become more than a friendly reminder or suggestion. It is the law!..
