On December 5th 2003, the Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) was deregistered after about more than 20 years of its existence. This party established back in 1983 by former Sarawak National Party (SNAP) member. As of more than a month ago, there is no PBDS. The Registrar of Societies (ROS) deregistered it due to its failure to answer the show cause letter in late 2003.
Before embarking the discussion regarding the deregistration of PBDS, it is wise to trace back the historical background of PBDS. Initially, Sarawak state politics was dominated by SNAP, a multiracial party. SNAP was established in 1961 and was dominated by the majority Ibans ever since its birth and strongly funded by the Chinese until one fateful day in 1981 when a Chinese, James Wong Kim Min, won the internal election for party president over a young Iban, Leo Moggie (Chin, 1997).
This of course caused discontentment among the majority Ibans. Hence, two factions were formed. Obviously, one of the factions opposed firmly of the idea of a Chinese party president...
