When you hear the name Cecil Rhodes, what comes to mind? Is it the Rhodes scholarship, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, or is it jewelry: gold, diamonds? Is it the Image of a wealthy, white male in an almost statuesque pose or is it the image of an ill little boy fighting, every day, for his life? These are all genuine answers but, none of them shows Cecil Rhodes in his true light. None of these images show Cecil Rhodes as the man who dreamed of one world under English Rule.
Cecil Rhodes was born July 5, 1853, in Bishops Stortford, England. He was a sickly child believed to have had tuberculoses and his father knew he was unfit for a routine life in England. In 1870, at the age of 17 he went to live with his brother in Africa, a climate recommended for tuberculoses at the time. Cecil's parents believed the warm climate would improve Cecil's heath and that he would be able to attain success there. They were right, Cecil's health flourished in Africa and by the time, he was 19 he had accumulated a large fortune from the diamond industry...
