The book, The Wide Window, is the third book in The Series of Unfortunate Events. You don't really have to read the others first but it is probably best.
The story is about three youngsters who, as you have probably guessed, lead lives of misery and bad luck. It all starts off with their whole fortune, mansion, toys and parents being burnt to ashes in a tragic fire. They are then placed in the care of Mr Poe the distributor of their parent's will. They then go off to stay with a wicked man called Count Olaf and he makes them work in his dingy castle. All throughout the story Count Olaf is making wicked plans to get his hands on their fortune. In the first story he gets caught but escapes to make more plans whilst the children go to different relatives in search of a safe home. In Book Three they go to live with an elderly Aunt called Aunt Josephine who lives in a house half supported by rickety stilts and the other half on top of a mountain.
