This film is based on the book by Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian Olympic gold medalist and mountain climber (played by Brad Pitt). The film was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud in some of the most beautiful countryside I've seen. (Okay, that's it with the comments on the scenery.)
Heinrich "Harry" Harrer leaves Austria just prior to World War II, in 1939, to climb Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain. Along with Harry, Peter Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis) travels to Nanga Parbat for the climb. Upon descent from the failed attempt, the group is taken prisoner by the British since they are considered "enemies to her majesty" due to the start of the war. While at the POW camp, Harry attempts to escape several times and eventually succeeds.
After he escapes, Harry is alone in India, wandering, trying to stay alive when Peter shows up and joins with Harry and decide to attempt traveling through India, into Tibet and then to China. During the travels, they are attacked by bandits, Peter suffers severe frost bite to his foot, and they are escorted by Tibetan "soldiers" to the border of India (which they escape before reaching). Eventually, they end up in the City of Lahsa, the home of the 14th Dali Lama (Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk)...
