There are theorists who believe that biochemical conditions control certain types of behavior. These biosocial criminologists maintain that there are certain minimum levels of minerals and chemicals that should be present for the brain to function normally from birth also known as vitamin deficiency. Research studies have been conducted and it has been identified that there is a close link between anti-social/criminal behavior and vitamin deficiencies.
Surprisingly through the reading of this chapter, I see that there is also a belief that sugar is related to crime. The way that the brain processes glucose and the intake levels is supposed to be association with attention span deficiencies. Diets high in sugar and carbohydrates have been linked to violence and aggression. In addition, hypoglycemia is linked to antisocial behaviors such as substance abuse.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is another area that was discussed. This condition is associated with poor school performance, grade retention, placement in special needs classes, bullying, etc. The research states that mothers of ADHD children are more likely to be divorced or separated, which I find it mind boggling if this is true...
