Allegory and the Work of Edward Albee
Throughout the history of American drama there have been several influential authors that stood out from all of the others. One of these writer's is Edward Albee. He was the head of America's contribution to the theatre of the absurd. Through all of the plays Albee has written and produced there is one word that comes to mind: absurd. Though at first glance Albee's plays seem absurd, there is a great deal of allegory, symbolism and many hidden meanings; this is especially evident in The American Dream, Zoo Story and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
Edward Albee was born on March 12, 1928 in Washington, D.C. Within a few weeks of his birth he was adopted by the wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Reed Albee, and therefore became the grandson of Edward Franklin Albee who at the time was an influential American Vaudeville producer..
