Main Characters in Brave New World

The two main characters in Brave New World are Bernard and the Savage. Although they are different in important ways, Bernard is a product of Brave New World and the Savage is a visitor to it, both are rebels and outcasts. Unlike other members of the highest caste Alpha-Plus Bernard, a specialist in sleep-teaching, is short and even ugly. He is melancholy because of his physical defects and isolated from his fellow men. He is therefore unable to adapt himself to life in Brave New World. Instead he wants something richer and more satisfying. For this reason the Solidarity Service does not move him, he wants a deeper, more emotional relationship with Lenina and is attracted by the other two characters Helmholtz and the Savage who have similar temperaments. But in several respects Bernard is an unpleasant character. It causes him to alternate between arrogant boasting and self-pity. He parades the Savage proudly before the Brave New World and is jealous of the Savage's friendship with Helmholtz...
