ALIEN Sequence Analysis

     

     This scene from ALIEN introduces the themes of fear, disparity and isolation to the audience. It does this by presenting a highly intuitive and underestimated alien and an inadequately equipped human, and then juxtaposes them to produce a statement about the two species ? the alien?s genetic and structural superiority shall overpower the human in this inhospitable, un-natural and alien realm of space. The narrative function of this sequence therefore establishes Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) as the sole human able to use cunning and strength of will to defeat the alien one on one. ...
