A Separate Piece
The world is full of many people. These people sometimes don't take a good look at themselves to find out who they really are. Of course, it is hard to establish an identity but it must be done to find out who you truly are. When an adolescent is in an unknown world it is difficult to "find" himself, as the character Gene experiences in the book A Separate Piece, a shattering novel of pain and betrayal. Gene's friend Finny, also known as Phineas has an overpowering identity and manipulates Gene. This leads Gene to break free and go through an identity crisis. This also strains their relationship to the point of Gene's violent reaction.
The Devon School, where Gene and Finny attend is located in New Hampshire. Astride the Devon School are two rivers, the Naguamsett and the Devon River. Finny and Gene use the water to play in during their carefree summer session...
