News provides us with documentation that illustrates and illuminates key connections V between public communication and the exercise of power, between freedom and control, between reality and representation.
Ethnocentrism: The News is inevitably slanted (knows rather than unknowns) because a cultures views of the world at large are coloured by a primary interest in its own kind.
Cultural Orientation of news
Two crucial factors in the selection of events to be reported:
1. the Ethnocentric nature of news coverage (that is its culture centredness)
2. The significance of proximity, or nearness.
Prime principle of newsworthiness: What happens to us.
News is seen as an exercise of power. Power value: consists on economic, political, and cultural interactions. This power value is what determines what country is more dominant and will get more media coverage in a particular country. E...
