In society, people judge others based on appearances because in a way it is part of their nature. Although Jane, the orphan in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, is intelligent and clever, her looks and poverty are the reasons why she is ostracized by society. Society views her as a low class governess. During Jane's childhood, the servants ignore her, and she is excluded from every party in Gateshead because she is considered lower than the servants themselves. As an adult, while Jane works at Thornfield, she goes through several situations in which she is judged and ignored for both her looks and social status. There is also the time she spends with the Rivers brother and sisters where Jane is also judged by her appearances.
As an ugly orphan, Jane is nothing compare to her beautiful cousin, Georgiana. The servants tell each other of how better treated Jane would get if she has the beauty like her cousin. This shows how mistreated Jane is just because she is ugly and poor. To them, Jane is nothing...
