Unemployment affects the whole economy, not just those unfortunate enough to be unemployed. The unemployed have skills and training that are not being utilised in production. National income and production could grow, if these people were gainfully working. The main reason for unemployment is a general lack of demand in the economy. If a company is not selling a lot of products their profit margin is going to go down and therefore they wont be able to keep as many staff. The staff is no longer required due to the lack of demand for the goods and therefore will no longer have jobs. This is known as general unemployment. Structural unemployment is related to those people who have lost their jobs in the primary/ secondary sector and do not have the skills to obtain a job in the tertiary, or visa versa. Some people are unemployable because of their ''personal characteristics''. You may have a criminal record...
