In 1993, each person in the United States threw away about four pounds of trash daily. Put all together, this trash would fill 45,000 trash trucks each day. About one third of this waste comes from packaging. Some companies have begun to use less packaging. Each individual needs to be personally responsible for generating less trash.
The most common and convenient method of disposing of municipal solid wastes is in the sanitary landfill. The open dump, which attracted populations of rodents and other pests and often emitted hideous odors; it is now illegal. Sanitary landfills provide better aesthetic control and generally are odor-free. Often, industrial chemical wastes of unknown content are combined with household wastes.
