debra thinks it's due to the lack of a "slash edge", which exists when at least one of the following three elements are present in a story.
1. transgression of social norms
generally, an example of a social norm is heterosexual pairings. therefore, homosexuality is a transgression of a social norm. in addition, i believe social norms are relative to one's cultural setting. for example, a pair of chinese men holding hands would garner second looks whilst the same cannot be said for the south asian (bangladeshi/indian/pakistani/sri lankan) workers we see in singapore...
