In my opinion baptising babies is not pointless, this is because it cleanses the child of original sin, to bring the child into the family of god and to bring the love of god to a sick child.
Even though it is difficult to imagine an infant being capable of committing a sin, as being a child they do not know the difference between right and wrong yet, but some Christians believe that even an infant has the ability to sin. Sin is anything that makes people not good enough to be in the presence of god. Children inherit the human nature from their parents that has a weakness making people liable to sin; this weakness is called original sin.
Most Christian parents want their children baptised so that they can enter the family of god and part of the churches congregation at an early age. During the baptismal service the parents and godparents make the vows for the child as they are to young to do it for themselves, in doing this the parents and godparents promise to bring the child up with a Christian upbringing and to encourage them to make its own commitment to god at the conformation ceremony. At the ceremony the congregation promise to support the parents in the up bringing of the child.
If a child is born weak and is struggling to live, Christian parents may request that the child is baptised at the hospital. Should the child live a ceremony will be heal at a church so that the child can be welcomed into the family of god by the congregation. It is also important to receive the sacrament at infancy because then you do not go through your life until you are baptised with original sin...
