A Higher Learning
College campuses are some of the most diverse places in the nation. Some students come from very diverse backgrounds, whereas others come from not very racially diverse places; this tends to cause a bit of a conflict as seen in the movie Higher Learning. Mary C. Waters, Vincent N. Parillo, and Shelby Steele all have different outlooks and different views on the reasons people behave the way they do; these different views correlate with the behaviors of 3 characters in Higher Learning, Malik, Kristen, and Fudge.
Malik is a Black freshman track runner on scholarship at Columbus University. Waters says that Malik is interacting with people that are different from him and also with other Black students which forces them to develop their identities, but his development is more difficult, slow and complicated because of the constant racism towards blacks. Yes, he does feel singled out and there is a sense of tension with the White students, but this is just an unfair part of life that consequences from living in a society with wrongful prejudices and discrimination. In this case, Malik tells Professor Phipps that he feels like people aren't treating him equally in comparison with the White students. Dealing with situations where people treat you differently because you are black is an ongoing test of growth that requires patience and a strong character...
