THE DEATH PENALTY
Jarret McCluskey
English III
Mrs. Williams
April 8, 1993
McCluskey 1 The Death Penalty
There is no easy answer to the capital punishment issue. ...
The death penalty has been used through out history. ... They decided who was
guilty and the punishment for most crimes was death. ... They added to the number of crimes that
were punishable by death, but the number of executions was actually less. By the mid-
1800s, there were only four crimes that were punishable by death (Flanders 6). ...
McCluskey 2
There is only one main reason why people support the death penalty. This
reason is, the death penalty shows certain crimes will not be tolerated. ... When the executioner
pulls the switch, 2,000 volts flow through the inmates body causing immediate loss of
consciousness and almost immediate death (Radelet 67). ...
Death by gas chamber is performed by strapping a person into a chair in an
airtight room. ... For fifteen
minutes after death is pronounced, the chamber is
vented to dispel as much of the gas as possible. ...
Death by hanging is performed by tying a noose around a persons neck while
they stand on a false floor. When the floor is removed, they fall and the sudden stop
breaks the vertebrae in their neck causing loss of consciousness and later death (World
Book 55). ...
McCluskey 5
"Death row inmates have always been heavily guarded in the belief that they
represent a danger to others. ...
Some people say even though their crimes are no more violent than other first degree
murders, confinement on death row has made them more dangerous. "The rigors of
death row itself create violent men" (Radelet 170).
Death row inmates are normally seen as people who can not be trusted around
others.
