The Thirteen Colonies The New England, middle, and southern colonies had many similar characteristics, but they also had many differences. The lands on which they lived were each very different, causing motives and other factors to change. Also the political and religious factors were different according to the people who lived in that area.
The New England colonies were originally beginning to form in 1606 when the Virginia Company received a charter from King James I for land in the New World. With the promise of gold, the Virginia Company agreed. It was not only a search for wealth, but also religious freedom. The Separatists Pilgrims escaped religious persecution and fled to Holland. Later, for fear of Dutchification, they migrated to the coast of New England as purified Protestants with the help of the Virginia Company. After settling they began to form their religion which was based on that of England but also involved politics.
