The thousands of jokes Montresor and I had shared all seemed quite harmless. To my misfortune, all but one was harmless. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I ever realized Montresor was insulted. I suppose he decided long ago that he would seek revenge. He not only achieved revenge, he accomplished revenge with impunity. It is believed that a wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. This was also accomplished by Montresor. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had Montresor given me cause to doubt his good will.
