HERBERT CLARK HOOVER
Herbert Clark Hoover was born on August 10th, 1874 in West Branch, Iowa. His parents were Jesse and Hulda Hoover. His parent's came from a community of Quakers and Herbert was raised in that religious tradition. His father was a blacksmith and they lived in a very small house. Herbert's father died in 1880 and his mother 4 years later, he was 11 at the time and went to live with his Uncle John Minthorn in Oregon.
He was able to go to Stanford University and ran for the office of Treasurer in his college. He managed to wipe out the student government debt and refused to accept payment for his work. At the age of 20, he graduated in mining engineering and worked in a California mine and was sent to Australia to search for Gold.
When he was 22, he married his Stanford sweetheart, Lou Henry, and they went to China to start coalmines,. He lived there a month during the Boxer rebellion and built barricades and risked his life saving Chinese children...
