One of Robert Burns’ quotes, “The best-laid plans of mice and men aft gang aglay,” means that very often friendship does not stay the same way one wishes. In some cases, even when friendship is deeply rooted between two people, at some point, some intangible forces, including those of emotion and human nature, often impair the feeling of friendship and could possibly lead it to an end. In one of John Steinbeck’s works, Of Mice and Men, George Milton and Lennie Small’s friendship is brought to a tragic ending because George found it impossible to keep Lenin out of troubles. In William Shakespeare’s famous play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Marcus Brutus is forced by the principle of patriotism to end his genuine friendship with his ruler, Julius Caesar. In the novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, on the other hand, the force of jealousy eventually brings down the significant friendship between Finny and Gene Forrester in an ironic way.
