Samuel Betances Critique Samuel Betances, noted author, lecturer, comedian, and student of culture and language, in a 1992 interview with Dan Holt, California Department of Education, gives a provocative and inspiring account of his struggle to accept himself and others in the midst of cultural and linguistic diversity. Samuel Betances was born in Harlem NY. He was raised in Puerto Rico, his mother was white and his father was black. He is not afraid of what he is as a bicultural person. He cannot change what or who he is and is proud of everything he has ever accomplished. As a young child he did not have a good education, he could not read or write in English or Spanish. As a teen he worked for a Japanese woman who told him to get his education.
