There are many factors affecting food selection today and the main ones that will be discussed are the physiological needs, psychological needs, social needs and economic needs for dancers. The targeted dancers in this paper will be on ballerinas, whom in particular require more of these needs than other dancers due to their strict environment in which they have to compete in the harsh industry. Ballet dancers can be of both gender but the industry is mainly female dominant and start at around the age of 10 or before they hit puberty and retire around the age of 40.
Physiological factors are vital for a ballerina's health for it impacts the body's needs and wants. For the body to maintain its state of health for the body to work efficiently, she must choose foods, which are high in nutritional content in appropriate portions. There are yet again many factors, which will contribute to the required nutritional content such as the ballerina's age, build, health and level of activity. The gland located in the base of the brain called the hypothalamus, has many functions including regulating appetite, thirst and body fluids.
Although this factor is extremely important to the health of the ballerina, most of them will choose to abuse and ignore it in hopes of achieving a set body weight to help them to succeed their dream. This will drive most ballerinas into a serious psychological and physiological disorder called anorexia nervosa. The media is mainly to blame for this as their view of the "perfect body" can have a dramatic influence on some dancers to have this body too...
