Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 and died on October 7, 1849. Poe did not have an ordinary childhood. His parents, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, both traveling actors, died before Edgar's third birthday. He was then taken to the home of John Allan and was baptized under the name Edgar Allan Poe. For the most part Poe's childhood was uneventful. He studied in England for five years and even attended the University of Virginia, where he was a good student. Yet, Poe's stay at the university lasted only a year because he accumulated large gambling debts that he refused to pay. John Allan also prevented Poe for returning and broke off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster. After he left school, Poe had no source of income so he enlisted in the army...
