Introduction
Organizations must have communication amongst its members in order for them to function effectively and efficiently. The path in which this communication follows is not always the same. One way communication takes place is through formal channels. This type of communication follows a path that leads through the proper channels in the official chain of command. Another way communication takes place is by using informal channels. This path of communication deviates from the formal channel process as it travels along its own route not following the chain of command. Is the informal channel approach a risk to the integrity of the organization? Will it cause the management team to loose control of the organization when they are removed from the loop? Analysis of both informal and formal channels will help in understanding the strengths and weaknesses, along with the risks associated with each of these approaches.
