The Woodland Tribes

In the North Eastern part of the United States and South Canada, where the great lakes are located, live the Woodland Tribes. These tribes are called this way because they lived in forests that were either located near one of the great lakes or near a river, like the Mohawks, who lived east of the Mississippi river. Everything they produced, ate, made and worked with came from the forests. Some of the tribes that we have studied that lived in the Woodlands area were the Mohicans, Iroquois and Huron. Around 500 years ago, there were over 40 tribes that lived in the Woodlands, now, there are less than 10 tribes surviving with very few people.
Most of the people nowadays have a common stereotype of the native Americans: they all live in teepees. Well, this is not true. The tribes from the woodlands lived either in Longhouses or wigwams. "Wigwams are round, wooden-framed structures, covered in bark" . The main difference between living in a longhouse and a wigwam, is that there was only one family per wigwam and in the longhouse there lived up to 12 families...
