Abstract
In 2000 it was estimated that there were 2.39 million licensed registered nurses in the United States. This reflects the greatest number of nurses in history. Yet thirty (30) states are experiencing severe nursing shortages and the projections are that the shortages will become more critical (National Center For Health Workforce Analysis, 2002). It is projected that by 2020, the supply of RNs will be 29 percent below the need (Cooper, 2003). This paper will examine factors influencing the trend, the economic affects of the trend, government, business, and society's role on influencing the trend and the projected future of the trend.
