The novel by alexander sozhenitzyn called One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich is a story about one day in the life of Ivan or "shukov". Escape is rarely an idea in any f the prisoners minds at the prison camp that shukov is a prisoner at. Escape is not even an idea in prisoners minds becaue of physical reasons social reasons and emotional reasons.
Physically the prisoners cannot escape and the guards and prisoners know it. The camp is in the middle of siberia it is almost always snowing there and almost always below zero temperatures. The guards know that they cant escape because of the amount of food they give them and the amount of sleep they get, they are way too tired and weak to get very far in those extreme conditions. The weather is not the only reason that the prisoners can escape not only that but they would have to fght off the animals in the wildernes on their way back home. The soviets put many of their prison camps in siberia with the idea that if the prisoners wanted to escape they could and they could see how far they could get. The soviets even had a death penalty where they took a prisoner out into siberia and said if you can get home you are free of course they knew they couldn't so it was basically the soviet death penalty.
Socially They have been in the camp so long that they have almost grown like a family where they know that if they leave and die in the wilderness their fellow gang members will suffer and they choose not to do that...
