If a cover letter is done properly, it can substantially improve your ability to compete for jobs and generate interviews. You must attach a cover letter when ever you send out your cv to a potential employer. The cover letter allows you to personalise and highlight your skills and achievements when sending in an application to each specific job.
Ensure your letter is your own as it must reflect your personality, your skills and your achievements - do not copy someone else's. Always be honest and positive. Write the cover letter with the employers needs in mind and not your own. Do not produce form or standard letters. A cover letter will have more impact if it is individually written to match each particular organisation or job.
The cover letter must not be more than one page and generally only 3 to 5 paragraphs.
