EDUCATION IN SCOTLAND
Scotland has its own education system, which differs from the English one in a number of respects. The Local government (Scotland) Act 1994 established 29 mainland and 3 island education authorities, which have similar powers to LEAs in England and Wales. Local authorities are responsible for nursery, primary, secondary and community education.
Under the 1981 Education Act, parents have a freedom of choice of school. Although all schools are zoned, parents can request a place for their child in any school they choose. However, their child may not always be admitted as local authorities have the power to restrict entry for certain reasons such as overcrowding.
Nursery school provision varies from council to council. In Aberdeen a pre-school place is available for four year olds whose parents want one. It is hoped that by 2002 there will also be places for 3-year olds on their ante-pre-school year. The catchment area is the same as that of the school housing the nursery...
