Maya Ying Lin
Maya Ying Lin was born on October 5, 1959 in Athens, Ohio. Her parents had previously come to the United States from China in 1948, right before the communist takeover. Lin's mother was a poet who taught literature and her father was a ceramist and the dean of fine arts at Ohio University. Influenced by her parents, growing up Lin found interest in both reading and pottery. In addition, Lin had an incredible talent for mathematics and art. As Maya Ying Lin grew older, she was given an excellent education and received her bachelor's degree from Yale in 1981.
During Maya Ying Lin's senior year at Yale University, one of her classes required her to enter a contest to design a Vietnam Veteran War Memorial.
