SJC: Gay marriage legal in Mass.
The article I chose is over gay marriages becoming legal in the state of Massachusetts. The case of same sex marriages becoming legal was taken to court. It was ruled to be legal by a 4-3 vote.
"We declare that barring an individual from the protections, benefits and obligations of civil marriage solely because that person would marry a person of the same sex violates the Massachusetts constitution," Chief Justice Margaret Marshall wrote (Kathleen Burge).
The article discusses how the ruling will not take effect until after 180 days. It also says that the SJC is the "ultimate authority" on the states constitution; therefore the ruling cannot be overturned. The opponents could fight for a constitutional amendment, but it would be 2006 before it would be able to appear on a ballot.
The issue in this article is whether or not same sex marriages should be legal or not in Massachusetts. Some people feel it should be legal because they think it is only fair for people to marry whom they want...
