As the United States struggles to establish a democracy in Iraq, Magstadt's idea of the fundamental challenges that the US faces are confronted by resentment from Iraqi rebels. These "Saddam Hussein" appraisers are institutionalized (by the power of his reign) to the extent where they would never look forward to this change and would execute their resistance by any means. Following the quick ending of declared combat, much of Iraq has degenerated into chaos bordering on anarchy. Gunmen roam the streets, women get kidnapped and clapped in broad daylight and US companies tasked with reconstruction have refused to begin work until their employees feel safe there. (nyu.com)
According to Ronald Bruce of news.com, the US also seems to confuse state-building with nation building from the start. The results are traumatic for those Americans with high hope for the democratization of Iraq. They could prove catastrophic for Iraqis themselves.
