Johnny got his gun
An anti-war novel
Dalton Trumbo has created a distinguished novel about the true atrocities that
young men of the twentieth century had to endure. This tremendous novel is known
as Johnny got his gun. This novel provides evidence on the senseless slaughter known
to be the bloodiest century in human history, World War I. Men were sent to war and
died physically and mentally. In this powerful piece of literature, Trumbo depicts this
extremely well by writing this novel to promote an anti-war theme. He has produced
a character that demonstrates the image of what war really did to humanity. ... This novel takes place after Joe has
been injured in the war, lying in a hospital bed where he must face his reality. ... All luxuries given at birth were instantaneously
taken away from him because of the war. ... In addition, Joe must deal with his anger towards the
war as he resents his involvement. Johnny got his gun is a anti-war novel because it
reveals how war physically, mentally, and emotionally causes Joe to suffer, become
lonely, and display how the war can decapitate a person’s mind into believing that
war is man’s duty.
Throughout this radiant novel, Joe is shown to be suffering from the fact that
he has lost everything. ... Joe also suffered mentally from the dreadful memories of the war. For
instance,
“He never wanted to her the biting little castanet sound of a machine gun or
the high whistle of a .75 coming down fast or the slow thunder as it hits or the
whine of an airplane overhead or the yells of a guy trying to explain to
somebody that he’s got a bullet in his belly and that his breakfast is coming
out through the front of him and why won’t somebody stop going forward to
give him a hand only nobody can hear him they’re so scared themselves. ... He now has
nothing except the tormenting thoughts of what the war has done to him.
