In Rappaccini's Daughter Rappaccini causes all the plants of his garden, and his daughter Beatrice as well, to become poisonous. He is in a way trying to become more like God by trying to achieve the power of being able to change plants and humans in the garden, giving him more domination over the garden and its contents. In Genesis chapter three, Adam and Eve experiment by tasting the forbidden fruit, believing that it will make them more like God, that their eyes will be opened to good and evil, and they will gain control of their world (the garden of Eden). However, in both cases, the result is not that the protagonists become more like God, but that they end in a situation where they have to endure a hardship they had not accounted for.
