The cultural and economic responses the British and the Spanish had towards the Indians of North America before 1750 were very different from each other. The Spanish interacted and mostly got along with the Native Americans. The British, were cooperative sometimes, but mostly they were hostile towards the Natives. The main focus of the British was gaining land from the Indians, but the Spanish wanted to convert them. Economically, both were interested in trade, but later the British became more interested in land. But culturally, they both tried changing the Natives to European ways.
The Spanish conquistadors transferred to America a system known as the encomienda, whereby favored officers became privileged landowners (encomenderos) who controlled Indian villages or groups of villages. They were called upon to protect and care for the villages and support missionary priests. In return, they could receive goods and labor from the native villagers.
