Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. was born in Indianapolis in 1922. His father was an architect, and they had little money. He went to Cornell University where he studied biochemistry and was the managing editor for the daily student newspaper. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a POW of the Germans, but eventually escaped. After the war Vonnegut was a reporter and later worked as a public relations man for General Electric. In 1950, Colliers published his first short story, "Report on the Barn House Effect...
