"Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have unaffected scorn. (6)" An America full of Gatsby's would be eruptive, disordered, and a nearly impossible place to reside in, however, an America without one would be just as intolerable. Without a hero like him in life or in fiction, we would miss what is so great and powerful about him but at the same time, keep America safe from such greatness.
Not understanding why Gatsby is so "great," many people glance through the book and find him just as ordinary and arrogant as the other characters in the book, however, there is a certain grandeur about him that is not only feared but also celebrated. Many times, this character is liked and disliked at the same time. While Nick praises Gatsby, he also expresses a certain amount of dislike for him. "They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together (162)." Gatsby started out living his life like the Wilson's and ended up living like the Buchanan's because of his perseverance and determination to succeed. Even though Gatsby had enough money to allow him to live peacefully for the rest of his life, he would have traded it all for the love and affection of Daisy...
