Comparison Essay
When every writer sits down at their desk they have one objective; to get a few main particular points across no matter how strange they may be. Most of the time these points/issues are ideas that readers can relate in our everyday lives, in some cases even to another piece of writing. In the short story "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and in the poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou many commonalties are evident, which help us to connect the two literary works. The most important of the common themes being both characters are very apprehensive about change.
Mrs. Mallard, in "The Story of an Hour," fears the new changes which she is forced to make. After hearing the news of her husband's death, someone she has shared her life with for so long, she knows that change is inescapable. An example of this search in her character is when Chopin writes, "There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name...
