African-American newspapers have been a very significant part of Black History and American history. These African-American newspapers came about before the Civil War as a way for abolitionist sentiment to be expressed. Even though there have been over 300 African-American newspapers published, I will focus on a few of them that have probably made the most significant impact. The Freedom's Journal and North star that paved the way and great success of The Chicago Defender and The Pittsburgh Courier. So now let's take a journey into history and learn about some of the History of African-American Newspaper.
The Freedom's Journal was the first African-American periodical. The paper was started in 1827 by Samuel Cornish and John B. Russwarm. Freedom's Journal started the trend of African-American papers throughout the United States to fight for liberation and rights, demonstrate racial pride, and inform readers of events affecting the African-American community.
