This paper is commenting on the article titled "Core Values and Total Quality Management." The article discussed how value plays an important role in TQM, and how management actions can act to undermine TQM if they are not congruent with the organization's posted values. I agree with the article wholeheartedly. An organization's vision or mission statement provides the framework that guides its beliefs and values, and unless it is transformed into action, the statement is useless. It needs to be demonstrated by the actions of the executives, managers, supervisors, and individuals. Quality management requires dedication, commitment, and participation from top leadership.
Total Quality Management is a way to continuously improve performance at every level of operation, in every functional area of an organization. Although all organization members work to maintain the quality of products and services, top management has the primary responsibility for achieving product quality. I say this because virtually every activity a manager or leader performs can have some impact on the quality of goods or services that an organization produces. Managers should be aware that decisions they make will affect their credibility and standing with their staff, and affect their ability to orient their organization towards Total Quality Management...
