Should Ebonics be taught in the public school system? All over North America this question has been raised by parents, teachers and school board members. According to Bob Ebonics means "Any of the non-standard varieties of English spoken by African Americans. Also called Black English, Black English Vernacular, and Black Vernacular English." Ebonics stems from the words ebony, "The hard dark wood of various other trees." "The color black; ebon." and phonics, "A method of teaching elementary reading and spelling based on the phonetic interpretation of ordinary spelling."
This paper takes the position that Ebonics should not be taught as a language in the public school system. There are many reasons why Ebonics is not acceptable as an official and beneficial language.
