Flying on instruments requires a lot more than just sitting and staring at the gauges. It starts long before you get in the airplane and requires a constant awareness of what's going on. Judgment and decision-making can mean life or death. Most of the time, flying is boring, uneventful, and goes smoothly. In the book by Richard Collins and Patrick Bradley, Instrument Flying Refresher, they discuss what is dangerous about that. Many things can take your mind off flying the airplane, boredom being one, and other distractions such as clouds, other traffic, and situations inside the aircraft. There are many points made from various situations and events that are discussed by the two authors. Some of these events involve pilots of airlines and some the typical instrument pilot flying out of his local airport. Both pilots use the same system and the same type of training is needed.
