The problem at SSA Mexicana can be broadly stated as the apparent discrepancy between Mr. Park's prognosticated effects of his policy changes and the actual responses from Mexican workers. In order to get the workers to work at the level of quality necessary, Mr. Park tried to raise their sense of discipline and responsibility and build a sense SSA Mex family. The various changes in training, personnel, control and production policies led to dramatic improvements in productivity and sales. However the changed system was actually resented by most workers and they were highly dissatisfied with the company's management.
Mr. Park did recognize that Mexican employees were less disciplined than Korean workers and that he would need a "soft touch". Still, he failed to understand Mexicans' culture and mentality in dept. For instance, he thought challenging the workers to do more by cutting on surplus manpower would lead to greater self-satisfaction and better quality work...
