The classical schools of thought in my mind, were stepping-stones, as with most theories during their own time, to get us where we are today. As we learned in class most businesses exhibit qualities that were prevalent in those classical theories. Division of labor, specialization, wage incentives, bureaucracy, hierarchies are many things that still exist today. With a college as an example; we have a division of labor with professors and other staff with their respective directors or deans, specialization with professors teaching in their respective fields, hierarchical structures with staff to director to Vice President to the University President. Although I do believe that the classical schools played a huge role in modern management theory, I feel the worker was neglected in these schools of thought. We tended to not assess the needs of the workers as a means to increase production, but rather to improve the production system, improve machines, etc. I also feel that this was when we began to realize that management, unlike engineering for example, does not always have an exact solution. It is a learning process, that over time, we have continued to perfect. It is the idea of making decisions strategically in order to better our business.
