Ann Petry's novel "Tituba of Salem Village" takes place during the Salem Witch trial of the late 1600s. The villages were filled with hysteria as people would accuse each other of being a witch. Tituba, the servant of Reverend Parris, becomes a target of these children, and the legal process of that day provided the evidence that Tituba is linked to evil forces.
Tituba, a slave from Barbados often does things that are unusual, such as having dreams and visions that she is back home in Barbados. Tituba also can stare in water and visualize things that are going to happen in the future. Tituba can also read fortunes with fortune cards. She has a special bond with a cat and sometimes speaks to Puss her money cat. One day during the winter Tituba asked the cat "Are you sure you want t go out side." These pieces of evidence all show how Tituba's behavior shows that she is a witch.
