When I think back to the time when I was learning to read, I remember one thing distinctly: "See Spot run. Run Spot, run!" I learned to read using the phonics approach. I managed to learn to read by the first grade even though English was my second language. Phonics is based on the idea that reading is a process of recognizing words. It focuses on sounds combining to syllables and then combining to a word. . I remember the teacher saying, "Sound out the word." Then, why do so many children read words and even sentences but do not comprehend a word they are saying?
Some believe that the better approach to teaching reading is using the Whole Language approach...
